Do I need metabolic / bariatric surgery?
People commonly misunderstand that bariatric surgery is equivalent to liposuction. This is completely wrong. Bariatric surgery is not a cosmetic surgery. It is the operative manipulation of a normal organ system to achieve a biological result for a potential health gain, such as improving diabetic and hypertension control. Proper pre-operative assessment has to be performed to decide the suitability for bariatric surgery.
According to Hong Kong Obesity Society, bariatric surgery is indicated for patients of age from 18 to 65, and fulfilling the following criteria:
- Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 35 kg/m2
- BMI ≥ 30kg/m2 and
- The presence of diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome or other obesity related co-morbidities.
